This is easily Piers Torday's best book yet. I picked this up, started reading and then simply could not stop. And it enchanted me in the way that 'The Hobbit' did; there is something brooding, magical and menacing about 'Midnight Treasure' while it also captivates by its quest-narrative and its richly imagined world. Piers Torday's writing just sings, conjuring a world full of life and death and tantalising adventure. Suffice to say, I loved it!
Tibor is a child of the night, a werwolf, adopted by his guardian, a powerful vampir. He and his friend Roza are on the deadliest of quests, and one that will test their very immortality. And they're not the only ones hunting for the Midnight Treasure. Battling with bears, wrestling with vampirs and racing against the clock, Tibor and Roza must decide who to trust. And whether they will dare reveal the secrets ... of the Midnight Treasure...
There is so much to add about this terrific book. Tibor and Roza are both wonderfully unique characters - they really came to life on the page. The adventure is propulsive but wrapped in Torday's masterly cloak of imagination, suspense and atmosphere. Like all the best fantasy writers, Torday's great trick is to make his world feel so real and lived in, and the stakes high because of it. I must read the next one...
